How long does it take to get a PhD?

This is my answer to the same question on Quora.

In Germany, your BSc is supposed to last 3 years, you then proceed to finish your MSc for 2 more years, and conclude with an academic doctorate for 3 years.

That being said, my impression is that many people on average need about (at least) an year more during most, if not all, of these stages, so it is not entirely uncommon to take 4 or even 5 years after your Master’s degree to finish your PhD.

Moreover, if you choose go into another field, you may need to take some extra classes or even a new MSc/MA degree (sometimes only unofficially), which would lead you to maybe up to 6 or 7 years, depending on your research during the doctoral studies.
